The future of School Safety. In conversation with Andrew Humphries on Elpas Technology
At Scutum Group UK, we are always on the lookout for innovative solutions that enhance safety and security. Recently, we sat down with Andrew Humphries, Managing Director of Scutum West, to discuss the transformative potential of #Elpas Technology not just in #Healthcare where it’s had most of its success, but also how it can be used to reduce costs and keep staff and students safe in schools. Andrew shared insights into how this technology works, its benefits, and the future of school safety.
Understanding Elpas Technology
Q: Can you provide an overview of what Elpas Technology is and how it works?
Andrew Humphries: “Elpas provides real-time location data and reporting that can be used in a variety of ways to ensure assets and people are afforded the highest levels of protection. The system operates by deploying low-frequency radio receivers linked to an Elpas Controller unit and either fixed asset tags or personally held devices which transmit ID data to the receivers. The Controller has a number of inputs and outputs that are customisable for each type of application and has a powerful software program to further enhance the operational functions such as Asset Management to include service records.”
Q: What specific features of Elpas Technology make it suitable for use in schools?
Andrew Humphries: “There are a number of ways that Elpas Technology can assist in protecting both the assets and people. For example, portable high-value equipment such as a laptop could be fitted with an asset tag. This can be configured to create an alarm (and lock down doors) if an attempt is made to remove it from a defined area. Likewise, lone workers can be issued with a staff ID badge which incorporates function buttons and fall detection which can be used to call for help and will provide a real-time location for responders.”
Implementation in Schools
Q: How is Elpas Technology currently being implemented in schools?
Andrew Humphries: “Elpas can be integrated into school systems to create a comprehensive safety solution. This can include an alarm condition, lockdown of specific doors, closing blinds, and turning off lights, all with real-time location functionality.”
Benefits and Impact
Q: How does Elpas Technology enhance the safety and security of students and staff in schools?
Andrew Humphries: “Elpas can create a lockdown solution if staff and students are under threat, providing a safe and controlled environment.”
Q: Besides safety, are there operational benefits for schools using Elpas Technology?
Andrew Humphries: “Yes, the system can integrate with the Building Management System to ensure that lights and heating are only on in areas that are in use, enhancing operational efficiency.”
Scutum Group UK’s Role
Q: What advantages does Scutum Group UK bring to the table as a distributor of Elpas Technology?
Andrew Humphries: “As one of the leading distributors, we have a wealth of product knowledge, favourable pricing structures, and simple access to the latest equipment and software directly imported from the USA.”
Q: What kind of support and training does Scutum Group UK provide to schools adopting Elpas Technology?
Andrew Humphries: “We consider potential Elpas clients as part of an ongoing relationship and provide full support and training in all aspects of operational delivery. This includes on-site assistance and remote support, ensuring seamless integration and effective use of the technology.”
Future Prospects
Q: Are there plans to expand the use of Elpas Technology to more schools across the UK?
Andrew Humphries: “We are looking to start with some pilot projects that will enable us to fully trial the systems in real-world applications. This information will help us improve and expand future rollouts to more schools and colleges.”
Q: What upcoming advancements or new features in Elpas Technology can schools look forward to?
Andrew Humphries: “There are already a host of features, but a new smartphone app, Eiris Go, enables off-site reports and control of the system.”
Personal Insights
Q: What motivated you to focus on integrating advanced technology like Elpas into school safety measures?
Andrew Humphries: “This is a natural progression and evolution from our origins in healthcare and custodial environments. The issues faced by schools are similar in some ways to those in healthcare settings, and we provide solutions that demonstrate duty of care obligations to staff and the welfare of students.”
Q: What is your vision for the future of school safety and security with the use of technologies like Elpas?
Andrew Humphries: “As the threats to schools increase and are constantly changing, so must the solutions we put in place. We aim to work in partnership with schools and educational institutions to provide the highest levels of protection for staff, pupils, and assets.”
