Skills Shortages & Apprenticeship Prospects

The government estimates that by the end of 2025 there will be a skill shortage of around 250,000 engineers. Within fire and security alone there is around a 25,000 engineer shortage.

There are really exciting prospects for the apprentices. In the fire and security industry it is estimated that around 80% of apprentices within three years of finishing an apprenticeship programme, progress into management roles.

Apprentices can join Scutum Academy from all around the UK. From Aberdeen all the way down to Plymouth.

Of course. Apprentices receive a salary, uniform and all the necessary tools and support to conduct their training, alongside our senior engineers.

All fire and security equipment from the leading manufacturers. This takes place in the field, with our senior engineers, as well as in the Skills for Security training centres, where they have invested in hundreds of thousands of pounds, in state-of-the-art manufacturers equipment.

There are really exciting prospects for apprentices. Skills for Security estimate that around 80% of apprentices progress into management roles within three years of finishing their apprenticeship.

Apprentices work from the Scutum regional offices for the duration of the 3 year course, and come together every 5-6 weeks at a Skills for Security training centre to complete their professional training and share knowledge and experiences. Courses are a 50/50 split between theory and practical training.

The suggested timescale is roughly three years for the Fire Emergency Security Systems Technician course that is provided. However, the assessment can be taken sooner, depending on how well an apprentice is doing. We understand that everyone learns differently and at different speeds. As long as an apprentice has been on course for a little over a year, they can take their assessment and become qualified, if they are ready.
